Prepare For The Robopocalypse!

Presuming your smart fridge hasn’t already pledged allegiance to the machine uprising, this puppet musical (Yes, a musical, with puppets!) is sure to deliver an evening of laughs, memorable guitar riffs, and just enough existential unease to make you consider calling it off with your iPhone. Known for fusing horror, science fiction, live rock music, and hand-and-rod puppetry, Puppeteers for Fears returns this summer with its most ambitious production to date. ROBOPOCALYPSE: THE MUSICAL! is a gleefully chaotic cyberpunk adventure that asks what happens when the technology we invite into our homes starts making a few too many decisions of its own.

Robopocalypse! is set in a world where sentient machines decide that humanity has become optional. The story follows teenage hacker Jolie Daniels, whose attempt to build an intelligent robot in hopes of reconnecting with her distant tech-mogul father accidentally unleashes a digital nightmare. Soon, self-driving cars, smart appliances, and every internet-connected gadget imaginable have joined the robot uprising.

If you’re unfamiliar with Puppeteers for Fears, you can expect a glorious heap of gleeful absurdity. This is the troop’s second east coast tour—their last was Cthulhu: The Musical! in 2024. This is the troop’s our seventh tour and Robopocalypse! Is their thirteenth production. Previous tours took Puppets for Fears up and down the west coast, with shows of a similar bent: Cattle Mutilation: The Musical!, (2019) and The Cabaret at the End of the World (2022).

From Sci-Fi Daydream to Today’s Mildly Alarm

Although ROBOPOCALYPSE: THE MUSICAL! feels as though it were written for this moment, Josh Gross, Artistic/Executive Director of Puppeteers for Fears, explains that the show’s first draft was completed in 2018. The idea grew out of an even earlier creative roadmap of monsters, genres, and worlds Puppeteers for Fears hoped to explore over multiple seasons. Cyberpunk had long occupied a place in Josh’s psyche—he cites the film Tron as a key creative influence from his youth. For Gross, cyberpunk also provided a centrifugal vision, offering a pre-made visual language, musical vibe, and set of absurdist characters waiting to be invented. And, as big AI moved from speculative fiction toward today’s insistent sewer-line spill, the production wrote and rewrote itself.

Audience members who caught Cthulhu: The Musical during its 2024 east coast tour praised the show’s “wonderful energy and humor,” “catchy musical backing,” and abundance of puns, jokes, and unapologetic swearing. Puppeteers for Fears latest show promises the same signature blend of absurd comedy, inventive puppetry, original music, improvisation, and affectionate genre parody that has made Puppeteers for Fears a cult favorite on the west coast.

See ROBOPOCALYPSE: THE MUSICAL! in Washington DC at the Pearl Street Warehouse on Fri., July 24 as part of the company’s 2026 summer tour. Tickets are available via the company website, www.PuppeteersForFears.com, and the venue website.
