[Release]: The Anacostia Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) Scholarship Foundation is pleased to announce its 23rd Annual Albert R. “Butch” Hopkins Memorial Scholarship Foundation Golf Tournament, a signature fundraising event with proceeds earmarked to provide academic scholarships for graduating seniors from Anacostia and Ballou Senior High Schools.

Both schools are in underserved communities in Southeast Washington, DC (Ward 8).

The tournament, birthed by AEDC’s visionary founder (the late Butch Hopkins), has grown into an annual event that draws 100+ golfers from across DC, Maryland, and Virginia for an exciting day of networking and putting for a purpose.  Since inception, the Foundation has awarded $360,000 in academic scholarships to students attending institutions across the country.  Last year’s tournament raised $73,923 and provided scholarships to 13 students.  This year’s fundraising goal is $70,000, with 100% of the net proceeds being awarded to deserving students in the first through fourth year of their undergraduate college careers.  New this year is the Inaugural Diane Fleming Scholarship Award.  Named after the late AEDC Scholarship Foundation Board Chair and community activist Diane Fleming, this new award will go to students who demonstrate a passion for and commitment to community service, leadership and activism.

The tournament will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2022 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Renditions Golf Course (1380 Central Ave, Davidsonville, MD 21035). On-course contests include hole-in-one (with grand prize of $10,000), closest to the pin (men and women), longest drive (men and women), as well as the Dixon OnCourse Challenge (featuring on-course games and prizes).

For those who don’t play golf, there will be a “19th Hole” non-golfer experience featuring food, music, games, raffles, prizes, 360 photo booth and over a half dozen local vendors ranging from online clothing boutiques, fragrances and cigars to hand and chair massages.  Non-golf  mixer will be held from 11am – 3:30pm at Renditions.

TICKET INFO:  Golf foursomes are $750, single players $200.  All golf entries include lunch, beer, wine, and a signature cigar.  Tickets for the “19th Hole” are $25.  Space is limited – tickets for both golf and non-golfer experience are available until sold out at www.aedcgolfdc.com.  Donations are welcomed and encouraged throughout the year.
