Chuck Brown (August 22, 1936 – May 16, 2012) was a music legend that took the spirit and culture of DC across the world. In creating Go-Go music, a hypnotically danceable genre deeply rooted in funk and soul, Brown pioneered a form of expressive culture that represented the artistic, unapologetic soul of DC.
Foreshadowing rap and many of the major popular R&B styles of the past three decades, Chuck’s signature style earned him a place in American musical royalty. In honor of his legacy, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DC DPR) celebrates Chuck Brown Day annually on his birthday weekend.
Join the celebration Saturday, August 20 at Chuck Brown Memorial Park (2901 20th St. NE). Backpack giveaway starts at 1 p.m. with a celebration from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
