When the Center for Disease Control (CDC) announced Tuesday that they had approved use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for use in children aged 5 to 11, parents breathed a sigh of relief.
“It’s like we’ve been holding our breath, just waiting to get to the surface,” one father said. “Now I can see the light –we’re almost there.”
The District announced that families could begin receiving the vaccine as early as Wednesday. Some pharamacies and clinics began administering doses immediately, many, including Children’s National, initially focusing on high-risk children.
Sites are opening as they receive supplies. The recommended dose for children is a third that of adults —10 mcg to the adult dose of 30 mcg, said a representative for Pfizer. So new vaccine needs to be ordered for children’s clinics. It is a two-dose vaccine given three weeks apart.
The District is expected to initially receive 24,600 doses, 18,000 ordered directly by the District. The rest are coming to qualified providers through a federal-retail partnership.
Below, find a listing of sites offering the vaccine to elementary-aged kids now through Nov. 20. No appointment is required for District walk-up clinics, and you can go to any location. Appointments are required for most pharmacies and clinics.
