This Sunday, Celebrate the 30-year Anniversary of roller skating to Anacostia Park to the sounds of Go-Go Music in Anacostia Park (1500 Anacosta Dr. SE) after an absence of more than two decades.

Don’t Mute DC and Check It Enterprises Partner with the 11th Street Bridge Project and the Go-Go Museum Café  to bring the wheels and the music to the Anacostia Skate Park and Field from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18.

Roller Skating has been a part of DC’s culture over the last 40 years. The importance of Go-Go to District history and culture is now well-established. The event works to preserve this culture and giving local Skaters the opportunity to engage and teach the next generation of skaters the opportunity to participate in this safe, healthy activity.

This event builds on the efforts of Darryll Brooks of the DC Department of Recreation (DPR) who, starting in the 1970s, produced Go-Go in Anacostia Park and the Summer Hut summer camp. It was infused into the Marion Barry Summer Job’s Program where many Go-Go artists and sound engineers got their start and introduction into the music, culture and experience.

“As the Don’t Mute DC Movement and elected city officials have moved to make Go-Go Dc’s official music, we couldn’t find a better time to return Go-Go music to Anacostia Park as part of the celebration,” wrote Don’t Mute DC in a press release. Performaners include “The Chuck Brown Band “, “Critical Condition Band” Vyntage Band and DJ Super Dan. Rollaway Productions will give skating exhibition and trainings throughout the celebration

There will also be a panel discussion on preserving Anacostia’s community and parks culture and inclusion on future projects and development. Representatives from partners including Washington Gas and Executive Office of the Mayor; Stay DC rent and utility payment assistance program; as well as the COVID Ambassadors Program. All will be on site to educate community on rent and utilities assistance programs and importance of getting vaccinated.
