Anacostia Arts Center Opens 14th Annual East of the River Show

Celebrate the greatness of Ward 7- and 8-based artists with ARCH all summer!

ARCH Development (Anacostia Arts Center, The HIVE 2.0, Honfleur Gallery) and the Black Artists of DC (BADC) have partnered for the 14th Annual East of the River Exhibition, co-curated by Terence Nicholson, Jess Randolph, Zsudayka Nzinga Terrell and Zoma Wallace.

Dedicated to showcasing the creative brilliance East of the River, this year’s exhibit will feature fourteen unique creatives with dynamic stories to tell through visual arts. With support from Black Artists of DC, bids for artwork can be placed both online and in person.

Everything kicks off at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 12 at the Anacostia Arts Center (1231 Good Hope Rd. SE). The event will be adhering to social distancing procedures provided by the Mayor’s office. Don’t forget to bring your mask!

Jay Coleman, 2021 Distinguished Artist Award Winner

On June 12, 2021, Jay Coleman, a world-class painter, and mural artist, will receive the 2021 East Of The River Distinguished Artist Award from ARCH Development. This award is a celebration of the contributions being made by dynamic artists East of the River.

As a professional artist and father, Coleman’s sensitivity to the human spirit has enabled him to educate and inspire parents and students alike.

After attending Morehouse College 94’ he returned to D.C. to further his studies at the Corcoran School of Art, 99’. As a portrait painter, he has been commissioned by presidents of colleges and countries. Recent projects include ongoing community work, a bronze sculpture for Barry Farms Recreation Center, 15 bronze medallionsfor the Howard Theatre Walk of Fame, and three murals commissioned by the Ellen Degeneres Show.

Viewers will have the option to see the award presentation via the Anacostia Arts Center Facebook page and in person. In-person seating will be socially distanced and capped at 40 attendees. In-person guests must RSVP for the show in advance.
