After more than 30 years of work on the project, a retailer is open at Skyland Town Center.
Rappaport and WC Smith welcomed CVS to its new home at Skyland Town Center, marking the opening of the first retailer in a permanent location at the 18.5 acre mixed-use development in Southeast DC.
CVS occupies a 10,032 square foot space fronting Good Hope Road SE. Until this week, it operated from a temporary trailer on the development site.
The new location offers Ward 7 and 8 residents a wide range of pharmacy and retail services in a modernized setting.
Operating hours for the store are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily; the pharmacy is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
“CVS may only be relocating around the corner, but the move is a big leap for Skyland Town Center,” said WC Smith CEO Chris Smith. “This opening represents a significant milestone for the project, one of many that we look forward to celebrating this year.
Expected to join CVS at Skyland are a Lidl grocery store, a drive-through Starbucks, Chase Bank, Skyland Nail Salon & Spa and other proposed restaurants and services. The Crest at Skyland Town Center, a 263-unit residential property, will begin leasing later this spring.
Skyland Town Center is located at the intersection of Alabama Avenue, Naylor Road and Good Hope Road SE. The project has persevered through many challenges.
Legal entanglements over property acquisitions, as well as a sudden decision from Walmart in 2016 to back out of opening a Skyland store, set construction years behind schedule.
District officials, including former Mayor (now Ward 7 Councilmember) Vince Gray have been working for years to get more retailers to open on the east side of the Anacostia. Skyland is seen by many as a crucial piece of those efforts.
“We’re excited to have our first retailer, CVS pharmacy, opening at Skyland Town Center this month,” said Rappaport President Henry Fonvielle.
“The development of Skyland Town Center has been a dream, decades in the making, and we look forward to having more retailers open for business in the coming months.”
Skyland Town Center will have up to 156,000 square feet
of retail, a medical office building and 450 to 500 residential apartments in a vibrant town square setting.
