Attend the annual food justice conference, Food Justice & Our Right to Food: The ‘Why” Conference May 23-25th at Kelly Miller Middle School (301 49th St. NE).
Hosted by the Gray Panthers of Metropolitan Washington and the Central Northeast Civic Association, the conference aims to answer one fundamental question: why is there hunger in our country, the wealthiest country in the world, and why do we accept it as normal?
Participate in workshops and panels led by activists and community members working on hunger, poverty and injustice in the DC Area, emphasizing “our various constituencies of the 99% — mothers, fathers, children, families, elders/seniors, single adults, workers, people of color, LGBTQI+, transgender and all oppressed groups.”
Over the three-day conference, participants will:
- Learn about the causes of hunger
- Be exposed to the disparities and inequities that exist in the current food system, and
- Gain an understanding of the existence of agribusiness that controls the food in our communities, country, and the world as well as the uneven playing field this represents.
The conference aims to understand why hunger persists in communities and what can be done to build a more sustainable food system together. A goal of the conference is an emerging organization that will use its knowledge of the food community and its struggles to put together a similar conference annually or biannually as a way of communicating with the food justice community.
The conference takes place Friday, March 23rd beginning at 6 p.m., and continues at 8 a.m. on both Saturday March 24 and Sunday March 25 at Kelly Miller Middle School (301 49th St. NE). All daily sessions run until 6 p.m.
Registration is $25, and scholarships are available based on need.
